You want people to visit your WordPress blog, especially if you’re blogging for your brand. The more visitors you get, the better your chances are of sparking interest in your business, being recognized as an authority in your industry, and developing more meaningful relationships with your customers.
To accomplish these, every element of your blog’s design must be both visually appealing and reflective of your brand’s values. This is true even for your blog’s background.
It’s not just a backdrop
If you’re blogging through WordPress, there is a good chance you’re using a theme that lets you use your own background image. Before you pick a random photo for this purpose, know that your choice will have an impact on your blog’s overall look and, to a considerable extent, the results you will get from it.
The most obvious benefit you get from an attractive background image is visual appeal. Humans are inherently visual creatures, so what your customers see in your blog will have a significant effect on how they perceive the site and your brand. Visual cues will also affect the decisions they make, including whether or not they’ll take you seriously or buy your products.
Moreover, the background ties your WordPress blog together, so a misguided choice can result in a blog that looks boring, confusing, or, worse, misleading. Using the right image will provide users with a pleasant enough experience that they’d want to revisit your site for future updates.
Choose your background image wisely
WordPress has a lot of attractive themes to choose from. With the right background, you can make your chosen theme’s best qualities stand out. Here are questions you need to ask yourself when you’re choosing a background image:
- Do you even need it?
Some themes allocate a large space for header images. If you think the header provides enough visual appeal to the blog, then adding a background may just end up making your site look cluttered.
- Does your chosen image reflect your brand?
The right background image is one that tells your customers about your business – and ideally, the benefits it offers – at a single glance. For instance, you wouldn’t want a flashy car as a background when your business sells cupcakes, right?
- Is your chosen image’s size and resolution ideal?
Blurred and pixelated images are a no-no – that’s a basic rule in web design. Full-page backgrounds are very popular these days and you can’t have them with small-sized images.
As most computer screens support a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, it would be best to choose an image that’s at least 1200 pixels wide. To check how your background image looks across different screen sizes, you can use tools like Responsive Web Design Tester.
- Does the background image drown out your copy?
Although the background is meant to catch visitors’ attention, it must never take the focus away from your blog’s content. The image must make your copy and images pop instead of rendering them invisible.
- Where should you get your image?
It’s best to have your own, especially one that’s customized for your business. Look for an image that quickly conveys what your business is about. If you don’t, websites like UnSplash, Pixabay, and Pexels offer a wide variety of free and high-quality stock images you can use.
Adding a background image is easy
WordPress is known for being easy to use and this holds true for changing your blog’s background image as well. Just follow these steps:
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance and then click on Customize.
- Click on Background Image. This should take you to a panel that will let you upload an image.
- In the said panel, click on Select Image and upload your chosen background image.

- Under Preset, you will be able to change the position of the image on the screen. Although you’re free to experiment, you’ll probably get the best result by clicking on the center position.
- Once everything is done, be sure to click Save & Publish to save your changes.
You can also follow these steps to change your existing background into something else.
The background image you use for your WordPress blog won’t be as important as the actual content you post, but its impact cannot be ignored. It should be aesthetically pleasing, but it should be much more than an attractive backdrop. Plan your background image carefully, especially around your brand’s unique qualities, its needs, and your goals for your business.
